On the issue of climate change, there are no regional biases and
Washington voters are united; at least six in 10 voters in every region
of the state say they favor moving forward on legislative solutions to
global warming. Washington voters agree that climate change is a
serious issue and they support taking action to combat global warming.
Lisa Grove of Grove Insight said, "The message from the people of
Washington on climate change is clear. They want their elected
officials in the state to lead on this issue and take action on global
warming." Two of the environmental community's 2008 Priorities for a
Healthy Washington this legislative session address the issue of
climate change. Governor Gregoire has shown strong support for tackling
the challenge of global warming by embracing the Climate Action and
Green Jobs Priority. The basic provisions of the legislation are
popular: around seven in 10 voters endorse capping global warming
pollution and setting a timeline to reduce global warming pollution. "Not surprisingly, support for green jobs is high as well,"
said Kurt Fritts, Executive Director of Washington Conservation Voters.
"This legislation is clearly win-win, good for the economy and good for
the health of our state."
Additionally, the other climate-focused 2008 Priority, Local Solutions
to Global Warming, incorporates measures which received broad support
through all demographics. This proposal would add a goal of reducing
climate pollution to the Growth Management Act (GMA) and identify
reducing global warming pollution as an important aspect of
comprehensive planning.
Joan Crooks, Executive Director of Washington Environmental Council
said, "Taking these steps now is the right thing to do and it's great
to know that the people in Washington enthusiastically support both of
the environmental community's climate Priorities."
"The results of this poll show that Washingtonians are ready to tackle
the challenge of climate solutions and want their elected officials in
the State Capitol to take action now," said KC Golden of Climate
Solutions. "We already knew that addressing climate change will require
a broad range of solutions; what this poll tells us is that
Washingtonians know this too and are ready to move forward."
Washington Conservation Voters, Washington Environmental Council and
Climate Solutions commissioned the statewide poll, which was conducted
in November and sampled likely 2008 general election voters.
